Sage Coffee Machine Water Filter: Fitting, Changing and Compatibility Guide for the UK in 2026

Sage espresso machines use a replaceable water filter in the tank, and it is easy to get wrong in three ways: buying one that does not fit your machine, leaving it in too long, or leaving it in when you descale. This guide pulls together what Sage says in its Barista Pro user guide and on its UK filter page, and adds the UK water hardness context from the Drinking Water Inspectorate. It is desk research. We have not fitted the filter ourselves, and your own machine’s manual is the final word, because filter and batch compatibility vary by model.

What the filter is for

Sage’s UK product page for the ClaroSwiss Water Filter says it protects against scaling, which it links to a longer machine lifespan, and that it works by reducing chlorine and heavy metals from the water, which it says improves the quality of the espresso. The Barista Pro user guide describes the machine’s tank as having replaceable water filters to reduce scale and impurities.

Scale matters wherever your water is hard. The Drinking Water Inspectorate classes water as soft up to 100 milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, slightly hard from 100 to 150, moderately hard from 150 to 200, hard from 200 to 300 and very hard above 300, and says hard water causes scaling in kettles and domestic appliances. Sage says in the Barista Pro guide that after regular use, hard water can cause mineral build-up in many of the inner components, reducing the brewing flow, brewing temperature, power of the machine and the taste of the espresso.

Does your machine take the ClaroSwiss filter?

Not necessarily every one. Sage’s UK page lists compatible machines, including the Barista Pro (SES878), Barista Express Impress (SES876), Barista Touch (SES880), Bambino (SES450), Bambino Plus (BES500) and Oracle Touch (SES990). It lists some models with a minimum batch number: the Oracle from batch 1750, the Barista Express (SES875) from batch 1735, the Dual Boiler (BES920) from batch 1749 and the Duo-Temp Pro (BES810) from batch 1738.

The page tells buyers to check their existing filter or machine batch code to be sure the machine is compatible. It also says in another line that the filter is compatible with all Sage espresso machines, which the model list contradicts, so rely on the list and the batch code.

How often to change it

Sage’s Barista Pro tutorial says each filter processes the water that flows through it for 90 days or 40 litres, so the interval is whichever comes first. The UK product page recommends replacing it every 90 days for best results. The Barista Pro guide recommends replacing after three months and tells you to set a reminder when you fit it.

How to fit the filter on the Barista Pro

This follows the Barista Pro user guide:

  1. Take the filter and filter holder out of the packaging.
  2. Set a reminder for the month the filter next needs replacing, and note that Sage recommends replacing the filter after three months.
  3. Soak the filter in cold water for 5 minutes.
  4. Wash the filter holder with cold water.
  5. Insert the filter into the two parts of the holder and make sure they are connected.
  6. Remove the water tank from the machine, align the base of the filter holder with the adapter inside the tank and push down to lock it in place.
  7. Fill the tank with cold potable tap water, to below the MAX marking on the side, and put the tank back on the machine, pressing down so it is properly attached.

Sage’s guide also says to replace the water daily: the tank should be filled with fresh, cold tap water before each use.

What water to use

Sage’s safeguards say not to use any liquid other than cold mains or town water, and that it does not recommend highly filtered, de-mineralised or distilled water, because that may affect the taste of the coffee and how the espresso machine is designed to function. Check your own manual for the water it allows.

Handling and storage

The manual’s specific instructions for the water filter say to:

  • keep filter cartridges out of reach of children
  • store cartridges in a dry place in their original packaging
  • protect cartridges from heat and direct sunlight
  • not use damaged cartridges and not open them

Take it out when you descale

Sage is explicit that the filter must be out of the tank before you add descaling powder. The Barista Pro guide says to empty the drip tray, remove the tank and take the filter out before filling the tank to the DESCALE line with the descaling agent. Refit a filter afterwards according to your reminder schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change a Sage water filter? Sage says 90 days or 40 litres on the Barista Pro tutorial, whichever comes first, and every 90 days for best results on the UK product page.

Do I need to soak the filter before use? For the Barista Pro, Sage’s guide says to soak it in cold water for 5 minutes, then wash the filter holder with cold water.

Can I use distilled or de-mineralised water? Sage does not recommend it. Its guide says it may affect the taste of the coffee and how the machine functions, and tells owners to use cold mains or town water.

Should the filter be in the tank when I descale? No. Remove the filter from the tank before adding descaling powder.

Where do I buy replacements? Sage’s guide says to visit the Sage webpage or contact Sage Customer Service for replacement water filters.

The short version

Check that the ClaroSwiss filter suits your model and batch, soak it for 5 minutes, fit it in the tank and set a three-month reminder. Replace it after 90 days or 40 litres, whichever comes first, fill the tank with fresh cold tap water, and take the filter out whenever you descale.
